How I practice Yoga off the mat


Good morning Reader ,

I was on my mat every day this week, both for my own practice and my teaching one. But the moments that really stuck with me most weren't the experiences on the mat.

They were in my foggy midday walk along a rocky shoreline, where the only thought I had was: one step, then the next, in the direction I want to go.

They were the sidelines of my son's soccer practice, where mindfulness looked like nothing more than noticing how I was standing there are the observer.

They were in the Core Yoga class where I nearly dropped a block on my face but managed to stay in control even through the laughter.

Yoga isn't just the postures. It's everything that happens around them too.

I also taught a Yin class this week that I almost cancelled. I was zapped, ready for bed at 4pm, and didn't think I had the energy to give. But I showed up anyway, in my PJs, and offered what I could. And if that's not practice, then I don't know what is.

Over and over and over again this week, I was reminded of the baseline of Yoga philosophy—the invitation is to show up how you are where you are and do what you can to be present in the moment unfolding.

Hey Reader, School's out for summer and I don't know about you, but as much as I love my family, already I can feel myself craving the solitude and structure of my normal routine.
